At Display Technologies, we created the Cinema Expert Lab to allow us to test our products and solutions accurately. The lab is small, but it is very valuable to us!
The lab is 100% light-controlled and has black fabric walls, which help dampen acoustic and visual reflections.
To simplify acoustic performance testing and ensure its repeatability, we have created an innovative test rig that allows samples to be quickly swapped and analysed.
For acoustic testing, we use the following setup:
KRK Classic 5 Active Speaker
Mini DSP Umik-X 16 microphone array
70cm fabric frame with fixed base
Fully adjustable speaker mounting platform
The fabric frame mounting ensures that the surface under test is always located in the same plane. The adjustable speaker mounting platform is mounted on linear bearings which allow the speaker to be smoothly moved back and forth as required to provide set distances from the surface under test.
The use of the 16 microphone array allows us to capture both on and off axis data simultaneously. We believe that this best captures the real world use case.
The data of the 16 microphone captures is averaged within REW to create a power response measurement that captures both directly on and off axis acoustic data. We feel that most accurately refelcts the real use case of a fabric surface stretched across a surface between the speaker and listener.
