Knitted Polyester Image Surfaces have no noticeable smell or off gassing even from the moment they come off the roll. In most cases these are actually clothing grade materials so this should be no surprise.
Woven Fibreglass Image Surfaces also tend to have no noticeable smell or off gassing. Any that may exist is quickly dissipated once the screen is installed.
PVC based Image Surfaces do tend to have a chemical smell when unpackaged and it can take several weeks for this smell to properly dissipate.
Spray Coated or printed Image Surfaces as used by one of the market leaders are by far the most extreme in terms of chemical smell and off gassing. Based on personal experience, it can take years for the smell to dissipate completely and initially it can be extremely unpleasant to work with.
This chemical smell can be an extremely unexpected and unwanted situation - no one wants to use a cinema that smells of strong chemicals and it often leads to headaches and other complaints in the early stages.
